Sports as a hobby report

Morphine Opilio

Sports is one of the big fields in Kenya; lots of people spend their time practicing sports and it has since turned out to be a hobby for many people.

Due to the desire to find out what people prefer as a hobby, I did an online survey to find out what people preferred as a hobby and here’s the outcome of it:

PlayStation, a video game developed by Sony and first released in 1994, took the lead though tying up with Car & Bike Racing as the most preferred hobbies. They both tied at 28.33% each from 17 out of 60 personnel.

Surprisingly, the basketball and boardgames tied too with 16.67%, each having 10 responses out of 60 people. Basketball is a famous game played almost in every part of the world.Board games is a game that involves the movement of counters or other objects round a board.

In the case of one not being an ardent fan of PlayStation, car& bike racing, boardgames and basketball, they had an option of listing what they preferred. This option lead to lots of varied responses: swimming, cooking, sleeping, volleyball, bunjee jumping, rope skipping & wall climbing.

These are just but preferences of what people prefer practicing as a hobby. We continue to gather more info next week and find out more on sports as a hobby.

Softball in Kenya

By Morphine Opilio

“softball is life with volume turned up!” These are the first words that hit your ears once you ask a softball player, not considering the fact that it was introduced in Kenya around 2012 and its slowly gaining momentum among the university students. Brief introduction to my fellas who don’t know what softball is: it is an outdoor game that is played with a bat and a ball and,for the most part, its rules are same as those played with baseball. One would easily mistake the two because they are variants of the same game , though primarily the difference is that in softball, the ball is pitched underhand while in baseball, the ball is pitched overhand, and just like the name implies there’s a difference in the balls.

“We’re so good your moms cheers for us.” states the Multimedia University of Kenya Softball school team. They occasionally chant the slogan to inform the non softball players that they missing out on the most exciting game one would want to play. Having been introduced recently in the country, it’s surprising how it has turned out to be a hobby to a number of people trying out their hands in the pitching and bating intrigues of the game.

“Save the drama for your mama, we’re here to play,” states one of the funny softball slogans. Agree with me that when one hears this slogan, you’d be interested in what the content is all about and this would lead you to terms such as, Umpires ,who are in charge of the rules of softball and control how the game proceeds, pitcher, who delivers her pitch to the batter.

“In my 1st year in University, I was invited by a friend to the pitch to watch Softball being played. Watching the game made my mind clear and relaxed since it required full concentration and engagement. That was just how I got hooked up to the game. I’d look forward to classes ending so that I run to the pitch for some softball moments and just like that, a hobby was built,” says Ms Mwangi, a MMU alumni who has been playing softball for the past 6 years.

Just like other ball games,Softball is a game that requires one to have total concentration and be able to think ahead, hence resulting to building up of a hobby. Softball has been described to be highly addictive and once you get hooked up to it, there’s no turning back. Playing it increases strength to the upper and lower parts of the body. It also improves cardiovascular fitness and increases the speed and agility.
Generally, softball is a good way to stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle and just so you know, softball is not for softies!

Business in sports

By Mollentinah Ajiambo Sisuma

As a student who is so passionate in business, I tend to mostly follow up on big entrepreneurs who have successful journey stories; the likes of Vusi Thembakwayo, Marie Flore and Mark Cuban, just to mention but a few.

Mark Cuban describes business as the ultimate sport. ‘In many ways business can be compared to the hyper competitive world of professional sports. The non-stop action ,ever changing nature of the game, and ruthless battles for the tittle, certainly draw some close parallels for many entrepreneurs.’

Cuban also goes as far as citing his number one most important rule for start-ups as never getting started unless the business is an obsession to you. This applies to sports as individuals who participate in sports tend to be obsessed with it first. For example Kobe Bryant who is known for the mamba mentality in the basketball sport.

Cuban is an adamant believer that in order for you to succeed, you have to love what you are doing.

It can be double-edged

Nereus Krop

something that you do because of a certain reason can turn into passion, something that will enable you to even pay your bills.

Athletics is one of that sport that will help you make money out of it.Many start running in order to keep fit. With this millennials eating fast food because of dreading to cook and just being lazy, doctors have taken it upon themselves to advise them to eat healthy and mostly to exercise and keep fit. By doing so they end up discovering their passion and making a living out of it.

Doing this makes life even more interesting  discovering your capabilities which also help you cater for your needs is like killing two using one stone.

A SURVEY ON EVENTS ~Mollentinah Ajiambo

SurveyMonkey Analyze - Events Survey - Google Chrome 12_11_2019 10_35_35 AM (2)

I was conducting a survey on the events that happen in the neighborhood. Among the responses I had, 62.5%  of the them said that the number of the events happening in the neighborhood was too few whereas 37.5% said they were too many. This survey is an indication that very few events occur and when they do, its occasionally.

Interviewer: what’s the tight end and line bucker?

Timothy :Tight end is like a wide receiver. Can receive the ball and also can protect the quarter buck.

Interviewer : So for how long have you been playing the American Football?

Hamza : I knew American Football from the movies and since it’s not been there in Kenya, I can’t say that I’ve played alot because I’ve only had like 3 sessions with JKUAT students and only one session with UON football club and that’s when we Decided to form our own club here in MMU.

Interviewer: How did your passion in American Football come in? Why didn’t you choose any other game like Volleyball, Basketball

Hamza : The passion just developed, as in,  I’d play rugby before in highschool. So when I came to MMU, the rugby wasn’t well facilitated and didn’t wanna get wasted in the rugby so, I kept on exploring the other options till I came to encounter with This game.

Matters but not a priority

Nereus Krop

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2KTW3TY

I conducted a survey wanting to know how many people prioritize there health. 46.56 percent does value their health while the other 44.44 percent don’t have their as a priority. The 45.56 percent that participate in sports are able to keep their health on track.

Only twelve percent of the people that took the survey participate in board games. This means that it’s only a few people that want value their mental health and the want to keep it on check. Most people don’t know that board games like mind games helps one to think clear because it acts like a stress reliever. Board games elavates our minds.

Twenty two percent play basketball and the other twenty percent participate in athletics. This is a good number of people that want to keep their metabolism rate and have strength.

According to this survey I believe that many people might not be aware that participating in sports is not only for the talented or professional but also for anyone who want to be healthy leaving.

I think it is time for everyone to reschedule the activities and fix any sports during there past time for them to participate in instead of heading for movies switch it up.
